in addition to all the other data stored in these books as already explained. that way, we have a better idea what dope adjustments to make. So we look back in our data book and find a day with similar conditions ( wind direction and speed, temperature, distance to target, time of day, humidity, whatever ) to the conditions under which we are taking this cold bore shot. and cold bore shots will sometimes impact elsewhere on the target than they would otherwise after your barrel is warmed up from shooting a few rounds. Sometimes, cold bore shots will be the shot a sniper takes when it counts, to make that good one shot kill. the first shot taken since the last time the rifle was used. One of the primary reasons snipers record all this data in a book that they can keep with them is that it is a reference source for them to look at when they take a cold bore shot.
